A Win for #MeToo, Thanks Beyoncé
If BeyHive hasn’t already made it obvious to you, American Singer and Songwriter, Beyoncé is in the process of releasing her seventh studio album, RENAISSANCE. According to her website, we can expect the album’s release on July 29th. A unique feature of the RENAISSANCE production is Beyoncé’s team is reportedly conducting ‘Me Too’ background checks!
#MeToo is a social movement created by American activist, Tarana Burke, to bring awareness to sexual assault and sexual violence. The implication of Beyoncé’s ‘Me Too’ background checks implies she is strategically developing a benchmark for ethical performance within the entertainment industry. What this means is if an artist will be working on the RENAISSANCE album they have not been accused of sex crimes.
In the past, Beyoncé has experienced devastation from learning Detail, the writer of her hit song “Drunk in Love” was accused of sexual assault and rape by six women. The willingness to set the precedent for entertainers, artists, producers, and all other industry creatives is a significant shift in the right direction. In the future, it will be great to see other performers take active steps to temperature check their communities for artists and creatives that cause reason for concern. This is clearly a win for #MeToo because Beyoncé’s role as a prominent singer, songwriter, and performer both brings awareness to #MeToo and provides solutions to issues pertaining to human rights and injustice.
